What is a dislocated worker?

A dislocated worker is someone who lost their job through no fault of their own — such as a layoff, business closure, or major economic shift — and is unlikely to return to their previous type of work. This status may make someone eligible for services at Missouri Job Centers, including career counseling, job search assistance, and training opportunities.

If you’re interested in exploring available resources or seeing whether you might qualify for financial assistance or training support, you can find helpful information and locations on our website or by reaching out to a nearby Missouri Job Center.

Unemployment Insurance (UI)

The Unemployment Insurance Program provides temporary financial help to workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. If you are impacted by a layoff or business closure, you must remain employed through the official last day of work to be eligible for unemployment benefits.

Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA)

The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) is a federal agency that oversees and protects workers’ rights to employer‑provided benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and COBRA coverage. EBSA provides information to help individuals understand what happens to their benefits after a layoff or business closure and outlines the options available to continue or manage those benefits.

Hiring Events

Hiring events are structured specifically for affected workers, providing dedicated time reserved exclusively for their participation. Employers are selected based on job openings that align with the skills of those impacted. There is no cost to attend, and events are typically conducted on-site or at a nearby location to ensure accessibility and convenience.
